Provence with Culley

Continuing our adventures with Culley, our 17-year-old nephew, we continued to Provence - St. Remy de Provence, to be exact - the home of VanGogh's psychiatric hospital, the ancient town of Glanum, and great artisans. We planned 4 days traipsing around this amazing countryside, ripe with sunflowers and olive trees, and featuring medieval cities, ancient ruins, and quaint french farms and villages. Our favorite stops are Les Baux, Gordes and Roussillon. What I think is a slice of amazing peace and tranquility is at the Abbaye de Senanque, and the gorgeous countryside around Gordes. Pat and Culley were quite tickled with the Roman ruins in Arles, and the bull chasing events there. We also saw Pont du Gard, a roman aquaduct and an engineering marvel from around the year 100.

We also had a lovely afternoon at the Domaine de Paul Autard, located in Chateauneuf de Pape, where Culley found that this amazing wine is actually imported to Colorado by a company in his tiny little hometown.
The beauty of traveling though isn't the things you planned to see, it's the unplanned moments you get to experience. We fell upon a jazz band playing at a local restraunt, where we had front row seats for dinner. We strolled one night past the childhood home of Nostradamus, and saw a reflection in an ancient city's source of healing waters. Our picnic at Pont du Gard was peaceful and pleasant, and reminded us that leaving time to just hang out together was probably the best "scheduling" that we did.
Let me know if you want to see more photos from this trip. I will send you the Picassa link from the trip.
