From Kermezan - Circuit de Coté des Ajoncs

While sipping aperitifs with the Count, he suggested we drive along the local coastline on a tourist route called Circuit de Coté des Ajoncs. It was nearly dark, but we were thrilled to follow the trail and see this beautiful coast line. There are some magnificent houses built right up to the beach, and we were able to walk right out and climb on some of the amazing outcrops. The homes are apparently all owned by wealthy Parisians who come and stay for the two month holiday in July and August. So all the homes were closed in November. What a pity to waste all this view. The local governments have placed a moratorium on building so the coast is very well preserved.

We had dinner at Le Surcouf, in the town of Perros Guirec, and watched the rain pelt the fishing boats and saw the tide come in. The tide apparently comes in very quickly and changes by 12 meters from high to low. Several folks warned us about getting caught out in it. We laughed at all the little boats that appeared to be abandoned on land, but later saw that they were actually just left at low tide, for the next high tide to lift them back up.

After a great breakfast of jams, toast, croisants, homegrown (and a little wormy) apples, and tea and coffee, we reluctantly left Chateau Kermezan for our next town, the fortressed town of St. Malo. It was a beautiful sunny day. And we stopped for crepes (a Brittany specialty) in St. Malo, before exploring this ancient walled city.

We loved watching the sailboat races and seeing the huge ships in this port town, and watched the sun sink down over the mainland, before we headed to Cancale, the home of fabulous oysters.
